Abbeys, Chapels and chips

On Wednesday we woke early (surprise.......it is light at 4.00am in Edinburgh). We went to shower, but there was NO hot water. That's an early wake up call, indeed!

We boarded the bus at 8.30 to travel to the border towns of Jedburgh and Melrose. We stopped briefly in Jedburgh and took photos of the abbey.

We then drove on to the village of Melrose where we visited their ancient abbey. It is said that Melrose Abbey is where the heart of the Scottish King, Robert the Bruce, is buried. Melrose is a very pretty little place with lovely gardens and a gorgeous little shopping street. We even saw a bee keeper, in all his protective gear, walking in the town.

We then drove back to Edinburgh where we were going to visit the famous Rosslyn Chapel, which featured in the book 'The Da Vinci Code' by Dan Brown. It was amazing! It is still used as the local church for the village even though it is a massive tourist location. Over 200,000 people visit it each year, all due to Dan Brown's book. This increased tourism has enabled restoration work so that the chapel remains safe and structurally sound. There was even a beautiful black cat who lives in the chapel ( we were told his name is William and he is the guardian of the chapel). He slept happily on a pew, ignoring the visiting tourists. Unfortunately you are not permitted to take photos inside the chapel.

We then drove back to the hotel. It was a lovely day.

Somethings you'd only see in Scotland - haggis and black pepper chips!
